Description
So here is the final design for my Harley Quinn Cosplay. I think I drew about 7 versions until the costume looked like it does now. But I am really satisfied with the design.
But anyways, I am gonna start from the beginning (if anyone is interested)
It started about one and a half year ago when I really got into Batman. I read classics like The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns and simply loved it. I never considered doing a cosplay though. But after meeting two amazing cosplayers who did Harley and Joker [link] I was inspired. And the idea of doing a Harley Quinn Cosplay came to my mind. However, having looked at her outfits and the amount of great cosplayers who had already done such a good job on her animated version I decided to try something different. Firstly because I don’t really like the way she has changed over the years. I kinda wanted to capture parts of how she is like in the animated series. You know, more like a harlequin and not too sexy but still a little and also dangerous. So secondly, the idea of trying to do a new interpretation was tempting. Besides, there are already all those ideas of how Harley Quinn might have looked in a The Dark Kight version out here on dA. Oh well and thirdly, I am not really self-confident. Wearing such a tight suit would make me feel real uncomfortable as would the short outfits from the games or Suicide Squad.
As for designing the outfit:
I’ve never really done this whole designing your own fashion stuff, because I’ve never really been interested in it. But I must admit designing costumes is actually a lot of fun. Since I’ve never cared for fashion I don’t really have much ideas of how you could design your own. So frankly there were some things that have inspired me greatly. As I have mentioned it was the idea of a design in “the Dark Knight” style. And I think most popular and probably most influential regarding this topic is this picture: [link]
On the other hand I still cared for those circus elements and I think the style of Emilie Autumn especially her bloody crumpet Captain Maggot was a bit inspiring too.
It kinda started to become difficult when I went looking for the right fabric, since I needed two types of each colour but yet the colours had to be very similar. Black wasn’t difficult. Black is usually black. But the red was a pain. And it was the whole process of finding the right material which delayed everything.
However, the pattern and sewing thing was not too difficult. It was doable, though I am not really satisfied with how the skirt turned out. I mean it is not too bad but if I do have better skills and time I think I will redo the skirt to make it look more like the actual design.
I am really proud that I managed to do something like that.
If anyone has questions on how to do specific parts on the costume, feel free to ask
